In May 1992 the Town of St. Marys invited Farmers' Markets Ontario, the provincially recognized organization governing farmers' market, to give a presentation on how to start a farmers' market. By the first Saturday in July, an ambitious group of volunteer Board members celebrated the opening of the St. Marys Farmers' Market in the town-owned Jones St. Parking Lot. Vendors on that first Saturday included the O'Sheas, Foeseneks, Jenkinsons, Slaters, and Troyers. Sheldon Berries became a market mainstay the second year of the market and many other vendors have come and gone over the years.
The St. Marys Farmers' Market now operates in the beautiful Milt Dunnell Field but much else about the market remains the same. The Market is operated by the St. Marys Farmers' Market Association, with a Board made up of vendors and interested community members. The Market remains a "producer-based" market which means no re-sellers are allowed and 50% of the vendors are farmers/growers selling their own produce. And the Market remains a member of Farmers' Markets Ontario which provides valuable support, including a Farmers' Market insurance program.
